Anne and I went to see The Little Ones at Mercury Lounge. And they had just flown to NYC for the weekend. And they were playing with borrowed gear. And their front dude was, like, crapped on by birds before the show. Whatever. They rocked anyway.
Like I said, I find myself at a loss to describe what they sound like, because the usual "they sound like X meets Y" doesn't really work with them. They have a familiar, poppy sound, but they're not particularly derivative and they don't wear their influences on their sleeve. I would instead recommend you go to their myspace page and check out the songs they have there. That will help, I promise!
One thing that was really refreshing about seeing them in concert was that they actually had fun on stage. They clearly love playing music, like each other, and were having a blast. Many of the bands I've seen from NYC (and these are bands I like, and enjoy seeing live) don't really seem to be having fun, or rather, they seem acutely frightened of having too much. Not so The Little Ones. Maybe it's because their California. The other rad Cali band I saw this year, Rademacher were the same way. A total blast and having a blast.
Of course, part of the fun is that The Little Ones' music is unabashedly noncynical and unironic. And they're not afraid to have more than one tambourine or even a cowbell sneak up here and there in a song. You still have one more chance to see them live in NYC-- they're playing the Bowery Ballroom opening for someone-or-other on Saturday. Go check them out if you can, it'll be well worth your time and money.
Love The Little Ones. Been blaring them on my itunes at work.
Them and the Spinto Band and Islands are my boppy, indie, rock on music of the moment.
