The FBI forced a man to confess (Falsely it turned out) to terrorist activities when they threatened to torture his family. Once the man was proven innocent, the section about how the FBI forced a false confession out of him was redacted for national security reasons. Read all about it here. If this doesn't get your blood boiling, what will?
If our law-enforcement agencies engage in this type of behavior, then we are no better than the most corrupt banana republic ruled by the most cynically barbaric genralisimo. We are not a more moral, more democratic, freer nation just because we repeat those words again and again--our actions should tell the tale. But, alas, this administration is happy to let fear rule the day. A bunch of wealthy, well-connected oligarchs who know they'll never be the recipient of a waterboarding, or made to wear a black hood, feel perfectly comfortable with allowing this to continue. This is someone else's problem, and anyway, we're under great threat aren't we? And thus fear becomes the great blank check we the people have handed to the cynical, the arrogant, and the cruel.
