Worth Noting...
For those of you who care about such things... Broadway grosses are way down this week. Click here and then scroll down to the second table to get the comparisons to last week. What do we see?
Avenue Q slides down 17.6% into the just-above-50% danger zone. A Tale of Two Cities drops almost 10% to become Broadway's lowest grossing musical at 44.5% (surpassing 13 at 45.6%). August is down 16.1%. There are drops almost across the board. The exceptions? The glowingly reviewed Speed-The-Plow, which is up almost 13% and American Buffalo, which hasn't been running long enough to have comparison numbers.
What about the reliable box office powerhouses of Broadway? Well, Grease is down 6.9%, but Wicked, Mama Mia and Jersey Boys are holding strong. The first two are down less than 1%, with Jersey boys down 1.5%.
Comparing it to the same week last year is kind of interesting as well. Last year, it was still a bad week for Broadway. But not as bad.
No idea what it means, but worth noting nonetheless.
Huh ... well, if AVENUE Q closes now at least they won't need to rewrite that "George Bush is only for now" line ...
