I know of cuts at two off-Broadway theatres, one a part-time employee, one full-time. Not fun at all.

Decidedly, no. I'm hearing a lot about entire theaters closing when their boards or major donors primarily work in the financial services industry - or when preexisting financial malfeasance ends 'debt bets,' All of this causes layoffs, obviously, but I think we see a ground shift of abruptly closing organizations, and then a pause as the surviving institutions finish the current season and restrategize, and then a more broad slimming down of belt-tightening next season. This will likely hit performers most acutely in 2009-2010 season.
It seems like a good time to diversify ourselves and our organizations, and practice agility wherever possible.

Sorry, I should add - I say 'no' in that it's not happening a great deal in Chicago, where I am. Most of the theater closings that I'm hearing about are regional and seem to be related to less diverse income streams for regional theaters - such as Milwaukee Shakes' loss of a single donor that shuttered it.
