I got a couple for ya...
- A few months back, I found myself at this neat reading series at Happy Ending downtown. I'm not even sure how I wound up down there for this particular line-up, but it was a lot of fun. I particularly enjoyed Julie Klausner's reading from her book, I Don't Care About Your Band. So I got it from the library (that's how I roll). And, boy howdy, I loved it. Seriously. Giggling on the subway, silly grin plastered on my face loved it. She's got a killer wit and sense of humor and the stories are hysterical. Check it out. Check her out. You won't be sorry.
- I should admit something now: I'm not an NPR listener. It's a thing with me. Let's just leave it at that. So I was only tangentially familiar with Mike Birbiglia until last night. I saw the ads for Sleepwalk With Me around town and it looked cutesy and vaguely annoying, so I wrote it off. My bad. I went last night to Union Hall (which made something like six trips to Brooklyn in a week for me) to hear Mike's new show-in-progress, My Girlfriend's Boyfriend. The second night is already sold out, so you're S.O.L., but if and when it comes back or comes to your town or whatever, go see it. It was a pretty amazing hour or so, unbelievably funny and touching and it's been sitting with me for about twelve hours and I think it's going to be rattling around in my heart for a while longer. If you're going to be in Toronto or Montreal for the Just for Laughs festival, make sure to catch it.
I actually did a totally fanboy thing about Birbiglia yesterday. Usually, as with all New Yorkers, if I see a famous person wandering about, I leave them entirely alone. This time, I had just listened to Birbiglia's recent story on This American Life seconds before wandering past him on the R train platform at Atlantic Center. Without thinking, I took off my headphones, interrupted him, pointed at my headphones as if they were evidence of something, and said "I was just listening to you on This American Life!"
Managing to not look put out, he said "That's great!"
Then I put my thumb up and said "You're the man!"
He said "Thanks!"
And I turned and immediately walked as far away as I could.
Massive failure to be cool.

Dude! After seeing the show, I would totally have done that.

This post made me miss the occasional segment, "What Would You Recommend?", but I guess this went the way of this being a theater blog... and many other blogs in what was the theatrosphere. Oh well, on to bigger and better things, I guess, but I really am having trouble killing all this down time at the day-gig.
