I'm already sick of the nontroversy surrounding Patrick Healy's article in the Times about Spider-Man. I'm not a huge Healy fan, but he really did nothing wrong here. It's an eyewitness, journalistic account by the Times' theatre reporter that appears as a news item, not a review and that goes out of its way to make no aesthetic judgement on what happened on stage and instead just report what happened.
The first preview of the much-delayed, rumored-to-be-disastrous, most expensive musical ever made is news. The Times did nothing wrong by covering it, nor do I feel, contra Playgoer that this is some kind of tawdry bid for the All That Chat crowd. All That Chat is a cesspool of bitchery about
things like the prices at Lincoln Center's concession stand. Patrick Healy went and did some actual (if perhaps lightweight) reporting. And given how much ad revenue at the Times' theatre section is driven by big Broadway shows, I'm glad that the Times chose to print it.
