I've gone radio silent for a few reasons. One of the big ones is that I find politics so frustrating, maddening, downright depressing and awful right now, I simply can't speak coherently about it. If I think about it for more than a few fleeting seconds, I start to turn into the guy from the Woody Allen monologue, with the shopping cart, screaming in the automat (yes, I'd find an automat) about socialism. I feel like I'm losing my mind over it and I need my mind right now. So I don't want to write about it.
We have a ruling class of lazy, incurious, insulated dullards who value their misguided ideology more than their fellow citizens, and are paid well and rewarded for doing the bidding of the sociopaths in the money party. It’s really that simple.
We're all so terribly, terribly fucked, it's not even funny. Not even in an ironic way. This post at Talking Points Memo gives Obama all sorts of lovely, earnest advice about how to regain the upper hand in this debate. It's smart and well-reasoned and totally goddamn useless. Because this debate is lost. Because it can't be won.
Tactics and strategy and great ideas are all great and wonderful, but if no one gives an actual shit about them, what good do they do? The best debt-reduction idea this administration has put forward is the ACA. Remember that? Remember how that would reduce the deficit AND lower health care costs and how all the deficit hawks hailed it as a landmark piece of legislation and supported its passage? Yeah. See what I'm saying. They didn't. Tomorrow night, Obama could announce anything, literally anything at all, to reduce the deficit: an ambitious plan of public works, rolling back the Bush tax cuts, single-payer health care for all, whatever and have the CBO show that it would reduce the deficit to nil in six months, but unless it involves cutting services to poor people and giving rich people more money, it's going to be called "unserious" and "over-reaching."
Our chattering class is dominated by entitled, well-fed, smug rich assholes who can't seem to see past their own comforts to actually care for other human beings. All they see is that their taxes will go up to give other people a hand-out. Full stop. And they don't want that. And since our government is led by people of their class, this is now the policy of our government. I appreciate all of the people who are disappointed in the Obama administration. Hell, I'm disappointed in the Obama administration, too. But I'm more disgusted by the rigged game we're all watching unfold and how helpless it makes me feel and how little way out I see. It's the kind of feeling that makes you feel awful about the future of the human race.
I just don't know what to say about it all.
