Well, it was nice while it lasted.
For about a hot second this afternoon, I was all impressed. Obama wanted to turn his jobs speech into A Moment. Scheduled it for the same night as the GOP debate, so he could show everyone who the president is. Then he wanted it to be at a special joint session of Congress to underscore A) who runs this town and B) what the blockage to getting things done is. It had the makings of a turning point and it sounded like he was ready to talk big, go big and actually deal with the real problems.
And then it seemed like it worked! The organizers of the GOP debate were all set to move the time and the candidates were all, "We totally want it this way! We do! Yeah! We're cool with this!" And then Speaker Boehner pulled a patented snit fit and was all like, "Waa! We don't like that date! We want it another time!" And I expected, for some insane reason, that the Executive Office would roll with laughter and say, "Tough shit, Perma-tan. The Big O wants to watch the NFL opener. Suck it." For a brief, shining moment, I thought he'd say, "See? This is the problem. I say 'white,' they say, 'black,' and pull shit no one else would pull. Even Newt Gingrich wasn't this much of a dick. See what I have to work with?"
And then I realized I have this president. Not President Bartlett.
It just sucks. I've been happy to defend this president and his manuevers and such for a long time now. But this is bush league (no pun intended). I mean, TPM got a senior administration official to admit that they basically bungled this. Haven't these guys ever played poker? Or Go Fish? Or Jesus, anything ever with other people where they wanted to win? Even if you did rush it, you play it off. You double-down and bluff until it's coming out of your ears. You don't tell the first reporter that gets a hold of you that you screwed it up. You meant it to be like this.
At this point, I don't know if it's Obama himself, or just a gun-shy, horse-whipped staff that's afraid of looking...I don't know...mean or what. But if he expects to win another term, he's got to start playing to win. Right now, you know what he is? A lollygagger.
Learn to play the game, fellas. Please.

Why does everybody keep treating politics like it is a game? Isn't it time for us to grow up? Poker? Jeez. How about moral weight? Was MLK playing POKER??? We are on the brink of disaster, and our media and bloggers are talking about POKER???
