The Whale, which will appear at Playwrights Horizons next season, is currently running at Denver Theater Center. This has lead a few outlets (including the Denver Post) to make it appear as if the productions will be the same. They will not. The Whale at Playwrights will feature a new director and cast and a new production. As with Lisa D'Amour's Detroit, it appears that Playwrights wishes to put their own stamp on the show.
I have to say, i love steppenwolf and I'm thrilled they produced DETROIT, but I don't think they got the non-naturalist aspects of the play. (=several, vital.) the play seemed like a lightish comedy there--they didn't land the unease that permeates the world, a sense that the foundations are about to collapse, and the steadily increasing tension that MUST ignite at the play's end. I'm glad we'll have a second chance to see the play in new York.
