With the flap around the Guthrie's season gathering some steam and generating a bit of press, apparently there will be a statement coming from Joe Dowling and the Guthrie next week. Which means it's time for everyone's favorite game, Artistic Director Excuse Bingo!
Place your bets on which of the following well-worn cliches we'll hear:
"We chose the very best plays...regardless of the sex/race of the author."
"Our casting process will be non-traditional and open."
"We are planning to partner with other theatre companies to bring diverse work to our stages."
"We're presenting the kind and quality of work that our audiences want to see and expect from us."
"We will continue, in the future, to present the very best work for the Twin Cities' communities."
Place your bets! (Or feel free to add any other A.D. Excuse Bingo responses in the comments.)
Dowling had a bit to say about this whole thing in a conversation on TPT this weekend:

That's right: asking for more equality from the Guthrie is a "self-serving" argument. I assume this is because Dowling thinks this is only about women and not minorities, and because the only posts he's paid attention to when his assistants pull up various social media posts on the subject are those from women.

I watched the clip. All I can say is... Wow. So women asking for diversity in Guthrie's season is "self-serving?" Funny. I learned from guys that women weren't being included in the season. And the idea that women are, in fact, part of the Guthrie's season because they work in the offices? Did I hear that right?

Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.
