Joe Dowling's full interview transcript for his spot on All Things Considered can be found here. There's a lot that he says-- most of it embarrassing-- that needs to be thought through and parsed. Hopefully we'll have more comment here on parabasis over the next few days.
That being said, life events and work load are conspiring to take me away from this issue and this blog. So if I may ask my excellent, excellent readers... if you see anything in the transcipt to respond to or comment on, if you'd leave a comment to this post, that would be a great way to help keep this conversation moving forward.
there's tons to say here, and I'll come back with something more substantial later, but, quickly, what's with the weird way he refers to the playwright "Tarell Alvin"? Never heard anyone leave off McCraney's last name before...seems at best disrespectful, at worst (& most likely) a sign he just hasn't thought much about Tarell or his work. Which helps shed some light on his programming issues.

The idea that he can't find any classic plays by women is ludicrous, there are centuries worth of great plays by men and women from across the globe.
There is no way any argument could be made that a classical theatre can't find plays to broaden their season beyond exclusively white men--other than he didn't bother to try.
