I remember when I first saw the trailer for Resident Evil 5, I thought to myself wow, that game looks hella racist. This trailer below is a little different than the one I originally saw (it no longer ends with a white guy firing indiscriminately into a mob of African civilians with a shotgun, for example) but you'll get the drift:
Anyway, it turns out the game is far worse than I thought it was going to be, apparently. I'm with Ta-Nehisi on this one. You can't argue "it's just a game" on one hand and argue for video game's legitimacy as some kind of art form on the other. Video Games don't get special rules where we're supposed to take them seriously only when it legitimates them as a way to spend someone's time and money (for the record: I enjoy video games and own a Nintendo Wii).
If you want to spend over $50.00 to buy something that takes place in Africa, check out Ruined at MTC instead.
XCOM: UFO Defence was, if my memory serves of late middle/early high school, a truly awesome turn based squad action game. And now it's available as a free download, so you can either (a) find out what the hype was about or (b) relive childhood memories.
