Rob, You may want to recheck your facts. General MacArthur was indeed a wartime general, but not during the turn of the 20th Century when President William McKinley was president but instead during World War II and the Korean War.

During McKinley's re-election bid in 1900, MacArthur was only 20 years old. While he was already headed toward a military career (he was a student at West Point), he was nowhere near any theatre of war at the time.

Of course, that merely calls into question how much you really know about history. To draw comparisons between the Republicans and Hitler is nothing but hyberbole at best and does nothing to advance the argument that we should be looking for solutions to disengage from Iraq.

I'm more than happy to correct factual inaccuracies in my writing, should they arise. However, those with even superficial knowledge of the Philippine Insurgency will know that Arthur MacArthur (father of Douglas) served not only as a general, but military governor of the Philippines during the insurgency. Also, a review of Hitler’s Mein Kampf (most notably the chapter on propaganda) and an examination of the tactics used by Goebbels, Hitler’s Propaganda Minister, who used Western advertising tactics to sell socialism to his country, reveals that Nazi propaganda tactics are in use today by both of our major political parties. Certainly, none of this has to do with how to deal with Iraq, which is exactly my point. In our current political process, intensive examination of policy is discouraged in lieu of rhetoric that plays on the emotions of the populace – as recommended by Hitler in Mein Kampf.

Rob, My apologies. Even as a serious student of history and political science and more than a cursory knowledge of the United States' takeover of the Philippines in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War, I did not recall the other MacArthur (while it's no excuse, I'll bet most people would automatically incorrectly assume as I did that you meant Douglas MacArthur). I stand duly corrected and say I'm sorry.

Apology accepted.
